The office of deacon. The Bible describes how the bishops ordained deacons to wait on tables and see that the widows were fed, so that the bishops would be free to preach and teach. The New Testament mentions both men and women deacons. In recent times, the diaconate fell into disuse and became seen as merely a stepping stone to the priesthood. Vatican II changed that and restored the diaconate as a separate ministry in its own right. It is still used, however, as the first step in ordination for those who aspire to the priesthood or the episcopacy. Though little used, there are also minor orders such as subdeacon. The duties of the subdeacon are similar to those performed today by lay Eucharistic ministers. Deacons still care for the sick and for widows and orphans. They assist the celebrant at Mass, proclaim the gospel, and on occasion preach.
